How Eagles Week 6 Disadvantages Can Put Them in a Struggling Position
Coming off a brutal battle against the Jaguars, the Philadelphia Eagles are again flying off to another dangerous Week 6 trap. While the NFL schedule offers some room to breathe and recalibrate, the soaring Eagles will face a tight turnaround and harsh disadvantages that could stall their momentum.
From crucial roster depth punished by injuries to the subtle, harsh mental fatigue of the ruthless gridiron grind, this week forces Philly into a corner. For a team with championship dreams, Week 6 isn't just another game on the calendar—it is a high-stakes Hunger Games that could expose their deepest flaws and send their season into a sudden, unexpected tailspin.
And get this! No team has ever handled this when they're coming off an international game and have to face a team coming off a bye.
If you still don't get the gravity of the situation, then let me tell you, it's a huge disadvantage. This phenomenon has only happened four times — so it is a small example. However, the team that is coming off the international game is 0-4 against the team coming off a bye and 0-3-1 against the spread. This suggests that it puts the teams at a competitive disadvantage.
It's not like the NFL wants situations like this. For the past decade, the gridiron has not had incidents like this, but the league gave up on that this year. Just imagine — a total of five teams stuck in this exact situation!
So what are the four games in which a team coming off an international game faced a team off a bye over the years?
Four times NFL teams saw a tough Week
2011: Jets vs. Bills
After they won a game in Toronto, the Buffalo Bills came back home to play the New York Jets after resting pretty well. Despite being the favorites to win, Buffalo still suffered a definitive 27-11 blowout loss, struggling to find any momentum against their rested division rivals.
2016: Chargers vs. Texans
Houston had to tackle a dangerous turnaround after playing a Monday night game in Mexico City. They were forced to play on short rest against a San Diego team coming off a bye; the still-fatigued Texans fell 21-13, losing by double digits for most of the fourth quarter.
2021: Falcons vs. Dolphins
After a Week 6 trip to London, Miami had to immediately host Atlanta, who had just enjoyed a week off. The Dolphins mounted a late comeback after trailing significantly, but Atlanta secured a 30-28 victory with a game-winning field goal as time expired.
2025: Steelers vs. Browns
Just last season, Cleveland had to travel internationally to London for Week 5 and immediately hosted Pittsburgh the following week. The well-rested Steelers naturally dominated the matchup, wrestling out the Browns' offense to under 250 total yards in a decisive 23-9 division win.
Historically, the teams that travel generally collapse early in these matchups. They average a meager 15.25 points per game and have been collectively outscored 70-30 during the first three quarters. While five NFL franchises face this brutal scheduling quirk this season, history says the odds are heavily stacked against them.
The NFL schedule came out in May, and the league’s vice president of broadcast planning, Mike North, spoke about why teams are no longer given the guarantee of a bye after an international game.
"I know it's not quite routine, but it's getting to the point where it's pretty routine," North said of international travel. "You play an afternoon (game) over there, it's morning over here, you're back in the facility by what? Midnight Sunday night? That's better than if it's played out in Seattle or Los Angeles … That's the new normal for us.”
But the Eagles are coming off a harsh loss against the Jaguars and are banged up. Now they have to face another unfavorable condition.
By chance, if the Eagles lose on Sunday, this will drop NFL teams to 0-5 all-time in this particular situation. If this happens, the NFL is going to have to give some genuine thought to whether it's okay to schedule a team coming off an international game to face a team coming off a bye.
